US

Four rows share CK 86215. One, 28475026, is out on the copy itself: a bare jewel case with no O-card and no barcode on its back inlay, where this copy has both. The three left are identical from the outside - same O-card, artwork, barcode and Columbia manufacturing line - and Discogs separates them only by the disc's matrix ring and mastering SID.

Breaking the seal and reading the matrix ring and mastering SID, against CPDP-107467 5 A04 / IFPI L327 (28136920), CPDP-107467 H2 1A 04 / IFPI L422 (1725337) and A9 FON 1CK86215 ECD03 / IFPR L247 (37998618). The copy is sealed, so that is my call to make, not a job to do.

Two American plants share C1-90258, and most of the run-out forms they are recorded with overlap.

Look for E A S T embossed around the side two label's spindle hole.

US

Three rows share C1-90258: two American pressings (1763028 SRC, 10665279 Allied) and a Barbadian one (7016264). The copy's Hollywood manufacturing block and Printed in U.S.A. point to the US. But the Barbados row records nothing about its labels or sleeve, so it isn't excluded, and the run-out that separates all three was not photographed legibly.

A raking-light photograph of the run-out, both sides. A ROGER 007 etching means Barbados; SP-AR, Δ19983 or B-30664 means Allied. If only the form both US plants share shows, look for E A S T embossed around the side two label's spindle hole, which Discogs attaches to SRC alone.

Three things worth knowing

Folder 15 came with its receipt

An original till slip from Portsmouth, dated 25-10-88: LP CHART 7.99, paid with £8, a penny change. It is the only documented provenance in the collection, it is thermal paper, and it is already fading - worth photographing on its own, soon.

The 35 × 93 cm polythene sheet the UK picture disc shipped with - the part almost always missing. Between folders 15 and 21 you have both the receipt and the banner for the same release.

Folder 3 plays backwards

On the Venezuelan pressing, LADO A carries what every other copy presses as side B. Discogs records the same reversed order, and the labels confirm it. Pressed by Sono-Rodven, not EMI.

How rare is any of this?

Every other number on this page describes a record I own. These describe the world around it: for each version Discogs lists, how many collectors say they own one and how many are still after it. Every Polish copy Discogs lists is unofficial

Every Polish release of this album in the version list is a cassette, and every one of them is filed as unofficial. They come from a long line of small local labels, RC and Mag Magic and Orion and Tango Music and Poker Sound among them, and not one from EMI. Some of those tapes are on this shelf.

Japan changed the title instead of translating it

The Japanese release is called 第七の予言, the seventh prophecy. Not a seventh son, and not a translation of one: the record was given a different name. Japan did the same to other Maiden albums, and the obi on this shelf's Powerslave copies carries that album's own invented subtitle.

Uruguay used both titles at once

The Uruguayan pressing is titled Septimo Hijo De Un Septimo Hijo and Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son together, as though the licensee could not decide which to use. Chile added the article and made it El Séptimo Hijo; Argentina printed the Spanish without its accents. Three neighbours, three answers to the same question.

What the grades mean

One candidate left standing isn't proof. Discogs lists what collectors have catalogued, and nobody's catalogued every pressing ever made, so I can't rule out one that was never listed.

Country and catalogue number match, and so does at least one mark that belongs to this release alone: a barcode, a printer code, a legal-deposit number, a label matrix.
