Why this grade

the ring reads CDP 7 90258 2 AR. @ 2 +, and under the normalise-then-exact rule the pages use that string is carried by exactly three rows in the master: 5944079 (Italy, CDP 7 90258 2 AR.@ 2 +), 370275 (UK, CDP 7 90258 2 AR@2) and 752255 (Europe, CDP 7 90258 2 AR @ 2). 752255 drops out on the inlay: its notes give the distribution box as I: 084 / UK: CDEMD 1006, and this inlay prints I: 070 / F: PM 516 / UK:CDEMS 1534. Of the two left, 5944079's notes describe this object exactly (MADE IN ITALY (on disc) / Printed In Italy (on back cover)); 370275 carries no notes at all, and this file first left it standing on the possibility that its UK country field was a contributor's inference rather than a fact read off its disc. It was not a safe assumption to leave unchecked: 370275's own submitted photographs show its disc printed MADE IN UK, in the same boxed STEREO / catalogue / rights-society / manufacture block this copy's disc prints MADE IN ITALY instead (IMG_3828, IMG_3829). Two rows sharing a ring and a catalogue number do not share a country their own discs claim to be made in, and that separates them the same way any other plant-identifying text would. 5944079's four recorded mould SID codes (IFPI 2501/2504/2513/2515) stay unresolved on the clear hub in these frames and no longer need resolving: the disc text alone settles the row. The 1988 Italian first issue 32366628 matches every distribution code on the inlay but records the ring as CDP 7 90258 2 AR.@ 2-9-26+; the stretch between the 2 and the + on this disc is blank at native resolution (IMG_3833), so it is not this copy's ring and the row stays out.

Every line below was read off a native-resolution crop of the photograph named beside it.

Read off the play side's inner mirror ring under raking window light, in four overlapping frames rather than one: IMG_3830 carries the start CDP 7 90, IMG_3831 continues 7 90258 2, IMG_3832 carries 2 AR. @ 2 (a small dot sits low between the AR and the @), and IMG_3833 carries the tail R. @ 2, a blank stretch with two surface scratches and no glyph, then a bright +. Joined across the overlaps the ring is CDP 7 90258 2 AR. @ 2 +. The @ is the plant's stylised glyph, transcribed as the character it most resembles. Two square colour blocks flank the text at either end (IMG_3830 left, IMG_3833 right); they are part of the mirror band, not characters, and are left out. No IFPI mould or mastering code was resolved: the clear hub is in frame in IMG_3831 and IMG_3832 but shows only its moulding rings under this light.

The object, and what marks it out

Sleeve, labels and inserts

  • A single CD in a stapled 16-page booklet with the iceberg cover, and a rear inlay with yellow spines. The inlay was photographed out of the case, so the jewel case and tray never appear: whether the tray is blue, as 32366628's Blue Tray format note says, cannot be read off these frames.
  • The disc face is silver-white with black print, the EMI United Kingdom logo, a boxed STEREO / 7 90258 2 / BIEM/S.I.A.E. / MADE IN ITALY block, the tracklist and the ℗/© 1988 lines. The mirror ring carries the plant's dot-matrix lettering with a square colour block at each end.
  • The booklet's back page and the inlay both carry the 0777 790258 2 4 number and the EMI United Kingdom logo; neither carries the older CDP 7 90258 2 block or a UK: CDEMD 1006 line.

  • MADE IN ITALY on the disc and Printed in Italy on the inlay - two direct manufacturing statements, one per component, and they agree. 5944079's notes quote both lines; 370275's own submitted photographs show its disc reading MADE IN UK instead, in the same block - the discriminator that settles the row.
  • BIEM/S.I.A.E. on the disc - Italy's rights society. A territory marker, not a pressing marker: it appears on Italian and Europe-filed rows alike (5944079 does not list it; 752255, 2593292 and 32366628 do).
  • The inlay's distribution box I: 070 / F: PM 516 / UK:CDEMS 1534 - the strings that separate inlay printings. 32366628 lists all three verbatim; 752255 and 2593292 give I: 084 / UK: CDEMD 1006 and are out on that; 4085889 gives PM516 and CDEMS 1534 but its disc says Made in UK and its ring carries :9:38.+.
  • The ring CDP 7 90258 2 AR. @ 2 + - the discriminator, and it narrows rather than settles: 5944079 records it with the +, 370275 without, and under the normalisation the pages use both are the same string. Every other candidate's ring carries a stamper suffix after the 2 (-9-26, : 8 : 5, : 8 : 1, :9:38., :10:2) or a different digit (@ 1), and the stretch after this disc's 2 is blank.
  • No IFPI mould code resolved - 5944079 records four, 370275 none. Absence in these frames is not absence on the disc: the clear hub is moulded, tiny, and needs its own raking-light shot, and the disc text below no longer needs it to settle the row.
  • MADE IN UK on 370275's own disc - read off one of its own submitted Discogs photographs, not its notes field, which is empty. The photograph, not the empty notes, is what rules this row out.

  • Case/inlay: general handling wear with some edge and corner softening; no cracks or splits visible in these shots.
  • Disc: light surface marks and handling sheen catch the light. No visible deep scratches or disc-face damage in these photographs.

Nothing on this page comes from playing the record. No Goldmine grade is claimed for it, or any other. I have no record of where this copy came from.

What is settled, and what is not

Confirmed on the disc's own manufacturing line. The ring CDP 7 90258 2 AR. @ 2 + narrowed this copy to two rows sharing that string under normalisation - 5944079 (Italy) and 370275 (UK-filed, no notes recorded). This file first left both standing, reasoning that 370275's empty notes field could not rule out a Made-in-Italy disc. That reasoning checked the wrong thing: 370275 carries its own submitted photographs on Discogs, independent of its notes field, and one of them shows its disc reading MADE IN UK in the same boxed manufacture block this copy's disc reads MADE IN ITALY (IMG_3828, IMG_3829). Two rows sharing a ring and a catalogue number do not share a country their own discs claim to be made in - that is a discriminator by the same logic as any other plant-identifying text, and it is checkable by anyone who opens 370275's release page and looks past the notes field to its photographs. 752255 and 32366628 were already out, on the inlay's distribution box and the ring respectively, and nothing there changes. 5944079's four recorded mould SID codes stay unresolved on the clear hub in these frames and no longer need resolving. Standing caveat: this method cannot exclude a pressing absent from Discogs.
