What the record says

Every line below was read off a native-resolution crop of the photograph named beside it.

Run-out photographed. Side B reads EMD-1006-B-2-1-1- with the hand-etched IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT BOLLOCKS, and Sterling appears separately. Discogs records that exact side B string among this release's run-out variants.

The object, and what marks it out

Sleeve, labels and inserts

  • Outer sleeve - standard artwork.
  • Insert - a blue printed lyric sheet.
  • Labels - the eye/Eddie artwork, fully printed.
  • Vinyl - black.

What distinguishes this pressing

  • EMD 1006 - the British catalogue number, and the same release as folder 1, so the collection holds the UK original twice.
  • A side B run-out of EMD-1006-B-2-1-1-. Discogs records seven run-out variants against this release; this copy carries variant 4's side B, where folder 1's side A reads a different one.
  • Fully printed labels, which is what excludes the UK test pressing.
  • A Sterling etching in a stylised hand, which reads as a Cyrillic string at contact-sheet size and resolves to the mastering house's name only in the native-resolution crop.

Produced, engineered and mixed by Martin Birch. Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound, New York. Recorded at Musicland Studios, Munich. Sleeve illustration, concept and design by Derek Riggs (with Rod Smallwood). Inner-sleeve photograph by Ross Halfin. Published by Zomba Music Publishers Ltd.

Personnel and studio credits are sourced from Discogs release 576952, the UK original, and apply to the recording rather than to this pressing. The producer, publisher and copyright lines are independently corroborated by this copy's own label, quoted above.

Condition, from the photographs

A photograph cannot grade a record - this is a description of what is visible, not a grade.

  • Sleeve: general handling wear with some edge and corner softening; no splits or seam separation visible in these shots.
  • Vinyl: light surface marks and handling sheen catch the light. No visible deep scratches, warping or edge damage in these photographs. The labels are clean and unmarked.

Nothing on this page comes from playing the record. No Goldmine grade is claimed for it, or any other. I have no record of where this copy came from.

What is settled, and what is not

Confirmed. The UK carries three vinyl entries under an EMD 1006-shaped number and two of them are excluded by what this copy plainly is:

How the other candidates were ruled out
CandidateVerdict
576952 - EMD 1006, April 1988Matches. Catalogue number, UK rim text, and a side B run-out Discogs records against this release.
8529299 - Test PressingDiscogs: “plain black labels and A4 sized test pressing report attached to front of sleeve.” This copy's labels are the fully printed eye/Eddie design.
1348869 - EMDP 1006The picture disc, a different catalogue number.

The run-out corroborates and no more. EMD-1006-B-2-1-1- is one of seven variants Discogs records for 576952 - and it is also cached as the side B run-out of the Fame reissue 3696589, which is folder 36 here. So the matrix does not even identify the release on its own. What does is the catalogue number printed on the label: EMD 1006 against FA 3247.

Not read: the rear-sleeve printer code, which Discogs gives as SP8804JU. It would have been a second independent check and the photographs do not show it.

Standing caveat: this method cannot exclude a pressing absent from Discogs.
