The object, and what marks it out

Sleeve, labels and inserts

  • Outer sleeve - standard artwork with a Brazilian rear and applied red stickers.
  • Inner sleeve - blue printed paper, double sided, with lyrics and the Eddie image. Not cardboard.
  • Labels - the eye/Eddie artwork in its usual purple and green, with Portuguese rim text and a registration number after every track.
  • Vinyl - black, with a blue oval sticker applied to the disc face.

What distinguishes this pressing

  • A purple label, which is the discriminator: Discogs describes the other Brazilian candidate as having “the label is blue instead purple.”
  • A printed paper inner sleeve, where that same candidate has “a heavy cardboard innersleeve.”
  • ESPECIAL printed on the label, which Discogs records as this release's price code.
  • A registration number after every track - a Brazilian requirement, shared in this collection only with folder 12.

Produced, engineered and mixed by Martin Birch. Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound, New York. Recorded at Musicland Studios, Munich. Sleeve illustration, concept and design by Derek Riggs (with Rod Smallwood). Inner-sleeve photograph by Ross Halfin. Published by Zomba Music Publishers Ltd.

Personnel and studio credits are sourced from Discogs release 576952, the UK original, and apply to the recording rather than to this pressing. The producer, publisher and copyright lines are independently corroborated by this copy's own label, quoted above.

Condition, from the photographs

A photograph cannot grade a record - this is a description of what is visible, not a grade.

  • Sleeve: general handling wear with some edge and corner softening; no splits or seam separation visible in these shots.
  • Vinyl: light surface marks and handling sheen catch the light. No visible deep scratches, warping or edge damage in these photographs. The labels are clean and unmarked.

Nothing on this page comes from playing the record. No Goldmine grade is claimed for it, or any other. I have no record of where this copy came from.

What is settled, and what is not

Confirmed. Brazil and 066 790258 1 are certain from the label. The master holds three Brazilian vinyl entries:

How the other candidates were ruled out
CandidateLabelInner sleeveVerdict
3736905not recordedprinted paperIts notes record “a double-sided printed inner sleeve with lyrics and eddie image”, which this copy has, and its price code Especial is printed on this label.
8962951blueheavy cardboardExcluded on both counts by its own entry.
6962656--Cached as Test Pressing, Unofficial Release; Discogs notes simply “Fake release.” This copy is a commercial pressing with full label printing.

Which way the colour evidence runs. Discogs records no label colour for 3736905; what it records is that 8962951's label “is blue instead purple”. So the purple label does not confirm 3736905 - it excludes 8962951, which is a different thing and the only thing the note can support. The same holds for the inner sleeve, except there 3736905's own entry does describe printed paper, so that one cuts both ways.

This was the test folder 12 was waiting for, and it has now been done. That folder sat at Narrowed (2) between the same two candidates, and what separated them - inner-sleeve material, with label colour as corroboration - needed no new photography at all: IMG_0652 in its own folder shows a creased, dog-eared paper inner, which is not heavy cardboard. Folder 12 is now Confirmed as this same release, so 12 and 39 are a duplicate pair.

Standing caveat: this method cannot exclude a pressing absent from Discogs.
