The object, and what marks it out

Sleeve, labels and inserts

  • Sealed. The shrinkwrap is intact in every photograph, and the owner states the copy has never been opened. Whether that seal is the original factory one or a later rewrap is not something a photograph can settle. Everything below is read through the wrap or off the sleeve: no part of the record itself has been seen.
  • A punched hole through the bottom right corner - the North American cut-out marking, drilled through deleted or overstocked copies before they were sold off cheaply. It is the reason a sealed copy of a 1988 pressing survived to be bought at all, and it is a permanent part of this artefact.
  • Outer sleeve - standard artwork with the Capitol/EMI of Canada rear.
  • Labels, inner sleeve, inserts, vinyl - unknown. Not photographable without breaking the seal.

What distinguishes this pressing

  • Sealed and unopened, the only copy in this collection that is.
  • A cut-out hole, likewise unique here.
  • MANUFACTURED AND DISTRIBUTED IN CANADA with the Mississauga address - an explicit country statement, not an inference from a rights society.
  • It shares its release with folder 5, so the collection holds the Canadian pressing twice: one played, one never opened.

Produced, engineered and mixed by Martin Birch. Mastered by George Marino at Sterling Sound, New York. Recorded at Musicland Studios, Munich. Sleeve illustration, concept and design by Derek Riggs (with Rod Smallwood). Inner-sleeve photograph by Ross Halfin. Published by Zomba Music Publishers Ltd.

Personnel and studio credits are sourced from Discogs release 576952, the UK original, and apply to the recording rather than to this pressing. The producer, publisher and copyright lines are independently corroborated by this copy's own label, quoted above.

Condition, from the photographs

A photograph cannot grade a record - this is a description of what is visible, not a grade.

  • Sleeve: general handling wear with some edge and corner softening; no splits or seam separation visible in these shots.
  • Vinyl: light surface marks and handling sheen catch the light. No visible deep scratches, warping or edge damage in these photographs. The labels are clean and unmarked.

Nothing on this page comes from playing the record. No Goldmine grade is claimed for it, or any other. I have no record of where this copy came from.

What is settled, and what is not

Probable: the sleeve is certain, the disc has never been seen.

C1-90258 on its own does not establish Canada - the master carries the same catalogue number on two American entries, 1763028 and 10665279. What establishes it is the rear-sleeve text naming Capitol Records-EMI of Canada Limited, 3109 American Drive, Mississauga, L4V 1B2, an address rather than an inference, together with the barcode.

How the other candidates were ruled out
CandidateVerdict
422006 - Canada, C1-90258The sleeve matches. The only Canadian vinyl entry in the master, and Discogs credits Capitol Records-EMI of Canada as manufacturer and distributor. Same release as folder 5, so the collection holds this pressing twice.
1763028, 10665279 - US, C1-90258Same catalogue number and barcode. Neither cached entry records a manufacturing address that can be compared against this sleeve, so they are excluded by the Canadian text this copy carries, not by anything recorded against them.

Why this is Probable and not Confirmed. The grade covers the whole artefact, and half of it is unexamined: no label, no run-out, no inner sleeve. The collection's own rule is that a sleeve does not prove what is inside it, and it grades a Conflicting case elsewhere on exactly that principle. It is tempting to argue that an unopened package cannot have been tampered with and so must be factory-paired - this entry was briefly graded Confirmed on that reasoning - but that is an inference about history, not an observation, and a rewrap cannot be ruled out from a photograph. Both external reviewers reached the same conclusion independently. Probable is where the evidence actually sits.

What would settle it is not worth doing. Breaking the seal on a 1988 cut-out to see two labels would destroy the thing that makes this copy interesting. The disc stays unexamined deliberately, and this grade should be read as "the sleeve is certain, the disc is unopened" rather than as doubt about the country.

Standing caveat: this method cannot exclude a pressing absent from Discogs.
