Why this grade

the country is stated on the object - MADE IN ITALY BY EMI ITALIANA SpA on the inlay rear - and corroborated by the S.I.A.E. rights society on the shell and the round SIAE stamp on the front. The spine carries 64 above a boxed 7902584, which matches exactly one row in the committed version list: Discogs 4398410, catalogue 64-7902584. It is Probable and not Confirmed because the catalogue number is the axis the match was made on, and no second, independent detail was legible that distinguishes this row from the other Italian entries. Note that the other three are not merely catalogue-number variants: 6105707 and 11755728 share a single catalogue number and are told apart by shell colour (see folder 52). No such pair exists at 64-, so there is nothing here for a shell colour to decide between

What the record says

Every line below was read off a native-resolution crop of the photograph named beside it.

Every line of small print, and the photograph it came from — 10 of them

Inlay spine: cassette device, 64, boxed 7902584, STEREO

IMG_1297.jpeg

Inlay rear, foot: MADE IN ITALY BY EMI ITALIANA SpA beside a boxed DOLBY SYSTEM device - a direct country statement

IMG_1297.jpeg

Inlay rear: barcode 0 77779 02584, and a second boxed number 79 0258 4

IMG_1297.jpeg

Inlay rear, foot: (C) 1988 Original Sound Recordings made by EMI Records Ltd and (C) 1988 Iron Maiden (Holdings) Ltd.

IMG_1297.jpeg

Inlay front: a round red SIAE stamp printed over the artwork

IMG_1297.jpeg

Shell, side A: IRON MAIDEN — 'Seventh son of a seventh son', LATO A, 64, boxed 7902584, boxed S.I.A.E., EMI, XDR QUALITY SYSTEM, Dolby device, and the side's four titles

IMG_1298.jpeg

Shell, side B: the same block with LATO B and the remaining four titles

IMG_1299.jpeg

Shell body is white opaque plastic, printed in black - recorded as an observation in its own right because folder 52's identification turns on shell colour, and this copy is the contrasting case

IMG_1298.jpeg

Shell, both faces: (P) 1988 Original Sound Recordings made by EMI Records Limited. above the Italian rights notice RISERVATI TUTTI I DIRITTI DEL PROPRIETARIO DELL OPERA REGISTRATA E VIETATA LA DUPLICAZIONE, LA LOCAZIONE E L UTILIZZAZIONE DI QUESTO NASTRO PER PUBBLICA ESECUZIONE E RADIODIFFUSIONE

IMG_1298.jpeg

Inlay inner: tracklist and production credits, followed by an Italian XDR paragraph beginning QUESTA CASSETTA E STATA PRODOTTA CON IL SISTEMA AUTOMATICO DI CONTROLLO QUALITA X.D.R.

The object, and what marks it out

Sleeve, labels and inserts

  • Shell - white plastic, printed in black, five-screw. Note that this differs from folder 52's transparent shell while carrying identical shell markings; see that folder's dossier.
  • Inlay - glossy colour J-card with an Italian-market XDR paragraph on the inner panel that the Australian and Canadian copies do not carry.
  • Case - standard clear library case.
  • Condition - card creased at both folds with light edge wear; the SIAE stamp is intact and legible.

What distinguishes this pressing

  • MADE IN ITALY BY EMI ITALIANA SpA - a direct manufacturing statement, so the country is evidence rather than inference.
  • Catalogue number 64 / 7902584 - printed on both the spine and the shell, and matching exactly one row. This is the match axis, not a discriminator.
  • S.I.A.E. and the round SIAE stamp - Italy's rights society. Shared by every Italian release on this master, so it corroborates the territory and distinguishes nothing within it.
  • White shell - recorded here because folder 52's Discogs candidates turn on shell colour. It does not discriminate for this folder: 4398410 is the only 64- row, so there is no sibling to separate it from.

Sleeve illustration, concept and design by Derek Riggs (with Rod Smallwood). Inner-sleeve photograph by Ross Halfin. Published by Zomba Music Publishers Ltd.

Personnel and studio credits are sourced from Discogs release 576952, the UK original, and apply to the recording rather than to this pressing. The producer, publisher and copyright lines are independently corroborated by this copy's own label, quoted above.

Condition, from the photographs

A photograph cannot grade a record - this is a description of what is visible, not a grade.

  • Case/inlay: general handling wear with some edge and corner softening; no cracks or splits visible in these shots.
  • Shell: light surface marks and handling wear are visible. No visible warping, tape spillage or shell damage in these photographs.

Nothing on this page comes from playing the record. No Goldmine grade is claimed for it, or any other. I have no record of where this copy came from.

What is settled, and what is not

One candidate, country established, and no second axis to confirm on. The inlay states MADE IN ITALY BY EMI ITALIANA SpA outright, and the S.I.A.E. marks on the shell and the stamped front agree with it. Country is not in question.

The spine prints 64 above a boxed 7902584. Of the four Italian cassette rows on this master - 64-7902584 (4398410), 54 7902584 (9489906) and two at 254 7 90258 4 (6105707, 11755728) - only 4398410 carries the 64- prefix, and the reading was taken from a native-resolution crop precisely because 64 and 54 are one stroke apart at survey resolution.

That leaves one surviving candidate, which is why this is Probable. It is not Confirmed because confirmation needs a detail that separates the winner from the others that survived, and here the only thing separating them is the catalogue number already used to match. The SIAE mark cannot do it (every Italian release carries it), and no matrix, tape-type or plant code is visible on any surface these photographs cover - the inner shell faces and the tape hubs are not among them, so this is an absence of evidence rather than evidence of absence.

Standing caveat: this method cannot exclude a pressing absent from Discogs.
