The mirror rings, read under raking light on both discs -- the actual discriminator. Disc 1 reads EMI UDEN 8360452 @ 1 1-1-10-NL IFPI L046; disc 2 reads EMI UDEN 8360462 @ 3 3-1-12-NL IFPI L046. Same plant, same mould code, two separate stampers. This is the CD's deadwax and the only evidence on the object that could have told this copy apart from another run of the same catalogue number.

CDEM 1576 and 7243 8 35874 2 1, both read off the rear inlay at native resolution, return exactly one row in the committed version list for master 19132: 2088858, Europe, EMI United Kingdom, 1995, 7243 8 35874 2 1, 8 35874 2, CDEM 1576. No other CD row in that list carries either string, and no row carries 836045 or 836046 in any form. Country agrees: the inlay says Printed in Holland, the disc 1 face says Made in Holland, and both mirror rings end -NL, which is what a pan-European EMI issue manufactured in the Netherlands looks like -- the same inlay block also carries the territory codes I: 084 and F: PM 516 beside UK: CDEM 1576, so the copy was never a single-country product. Year agrees: the bonus disc is stamped © 1995 and the row is filed 1995. The discriminator is the mirror ring, photographed under raking light on both discs and quoted in full under deadwax below; it is the one string that could have separated this copy from an uncatalogued run of the same catalogue number, and nothing else in this master shares it. Two things this grade does not claim. The version list is incomplete by construction, so a pressing that never reached Discogs cannot be ruled out. And 2088858's own release page was not fetched for this entry -- only the committed version list was used -- so the ring was not compared against a matrix Discogs records for that row. The owner's note decided nothing here. Typed while holding the discs, it gives disc 1 as EMI UDEN 8360452 @ 1 1-1-10-NL IFPI LO46 and disc 2 as EMI UDEN 8360462 @ 3 3-1-12-NL IFPI LO46; every character of that is legible in the photographs, so it corroborates the reading rather than adding to it

Every line below was read off a native-resolution crop of the photograph named beside it.

Photographed under raking light on both discs, and read at native resolution. Disc 1's inner mirror ring reads EMI UDEN 8360452 @ 1 (IMG_2999, IMG_3001, IMG_3002), continuing 1-1-10-NL and IFPI L046 (IMG_3003, IMG_3004, IMG_3005, IMG_3006). Disc 2's reads EMI UDEN 8360462 @ 3 (IMG_3014, IMG_3015), continuing 3-1-12-NL and IFPI L046 (IMG_3016, IMG_3017, IMG_3011, IMG_3012, IMG_3013). EMI UDEN is the EMI plant at Uden in the Netherlands and IFPI L046 is its mould code; the -NL suffix says the same thing a third time. The two discs differ in the etched number and in the run digits -- @ 1 with 1-1-10 against @ 3 with 3-1-12 -- which is what two separate stampers for the two halves of one package look like. These strings were not compared against a matrix recorded on 2088858's Discogs page, which was not fetched for this entry; the comparison available here was against every other catalogue number in master 19132's committed version list, none of which is this one.

The object, and what marks it out

Sleeve, labels and inserts

  • Standard double jewel case, two trays, with the album booklet under the front lid and a separate printed page facing disc 2.
  • Both discs are picture discs -- disc 1 carries the WASTED YEARS single artwork, disc 2 a bar interior with Eddie in a long coat and top hat. This is what the front sticker's 2 LIMITED EDITION PICTURE DISCS. refers to; neither is a plain silver disc with a printed label.
  • Front sticker present and intact on the outside of the case, gold with a black rule, reading MAIDCAT10 under the sales copy.
  • Condition: the case shows light surface scuffing and the usual hairline marks across the front lid. Both discs photograph clean across the play side, with the fine scratch visible near disc 2's ring in IMG_3017 and a few light marks on disc 1's clear inner band; nothing that reads as a handling groove in these photographs.
  • The booklet is complete and flat, printed yellow-on-black throughout, with no writing, tears or missing pages in the frames taken.

What distinguishes this pressing

  • UK: CDEM 1576 and 7243 8 35874 2 1 on the rear inlay -- the match axis, and one row in the committed version list carries both: 2088858. Nothing else in that list carries either.
  • 7243 8 36046 2 3 printed on disc 2's rim, 7243 8 36045 ... on disc 1's (the disc 1 number runs off under the tray edge in IMG_2985). These printed per-disc numbers are the same digits the rings are etched with, 836046-2 and 836045-2, which is how the two discs are known to belong to this package rather than to have been swapped in from another.
  • Made in Holland on disc 1, Printed in Holland on the inlay, -NL in both rings -- three independent country-of-manufacture statements, all the Netherlands, against a row Discogs files as Europe. Those do not disagree: Europe is the market the issue was sold into, and the inlay proves it by carrying I: 084 and F: PM 516 beside the UK number.
  • Not evidence: the barcode. 7243 8 35874 2 1 is the commercial release's number and would be printed on every copy of this edition whatever plant pressed it. It matched one row here only because the edition itself is catalogued once.
  • Not evidence: the artwork. The sleeve is the 1986 album artwork, identical across most pressings of this record; the MAIDCAT10 sticker narrows it to the 1995 bonus-CD series but not to a release.

  • Disc: light surface marks and handling sheen catch the light. No visible deep scratches or disc-face damage in these photographs.

What is settled, and what is not

Pinned down: the 1995 Original Album Plus Bonus CD double, pressed at EMI Uden in Holland for the European market. The gold sticker promises two limited-edition picture discs and the case delivers them -- the album on a WASTED YEARS disc, four B-sides (Reach Out, Juanita, Sherriff Of Huddersfield, That Girl) on a bar-scene disc stamped © 1995. CDEM 1576 and 7243 8 35874 2 1 on the rear inlay return one row in the master's committed version list and that row agrees on country, label and year, while the mirror rings -- EMI UDEN 8360452 @ 1 1-1-10-NL IFPI L046 and EMI UDEN 8360462 @ 3 3-1-12-NL IFPI L046 -- name the plant and the stampers outright. Two honest limits stay on the record: the version list is incomplete by construction, so an uncatalogued run of the same numbers cannot be excluded, and 2088858's release page was not fetched, so nothing checked the rings against a matrix Discogs holds for that row. Fetching it would turn a ring that matches nothing else into a ring that matches its own release.
